The first crook turned supergrass has died at his Croydon home of old age.
Bertie Smalls survived for more than 30 years after informing on more than 28 of his underworld mates who were sentenced to a total of 414 years.
He was arrested following two bank raids where his gang stole £437,000 and spared jail in return for giving evidence.
Giving evidence during a 1974 Old Bailey trial Smalls was warned by gang members his life was in jeopardy.
Gang bosses including the Kray twins reportedly offered a £1million bounty in the 70s for anyone who killed Smalls.
He went into hiding but stayed in Britain and soon return to his old drinking spots in north London.
Smalls was 72 when he died.
