A Thames Ditton man admitted trashing his police cell after being arrested in Surbiton for drunkenly hurling abuse at rail passengers.

Gary Field, 48, of Manordene Close, was arrested at Surbiton station on December 5 for a public order offence after shouting, swearing and spitting.

Lynne Sheppard, prosecuting at Kingston Magistrates' Court on February 7, said Field, who told officers he had drunk two bottles of vodka, was then taken to Sutton police station where he verbally abused staff before damaging his cell.

"He immediately started ringing his buzzer and shouting and swearing at staff," she said. "He was watched on CCTV pacing his cell, repeatedly kicking the door and then urinating in the corner of the cell."

Ms Sheppard said Field asked for food and coffee which he then smeared on the walls and threw on the floor and in the toilet, before putting the cell's pillow in the urine.

Mr Kadri, defending Field, said: "This was the first time he had drunk in three months.

"He does accept his behaviour at the police station was out of order and he is very, very sorry for what has happened."

Field pleaded guilty to criminal damage and a public order offence on February 7.

He was sentenced to a 12-month community order on February 8.

Field also admitted breaching a 13-week suspended sentence for racially aggravated harassment, given in April 2007.

He had this 12-month suspension extended for a further 6 months.
