A motorist who died when his sports car was involved in a dramatic crash with a lorry has been named.
Jerome Roye, from Buxton Road in Thornton Heath, was driving a convertible silver MGF sports car which collided with a BOC Industrial lorry yesterday morning.
The accident happened at the junction of Leigham Court Road and Ilex Way in Streatham around 9.40am.
The 24-year-old, whose immediate family live in Tulse Hill, was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger, a 22-year-old woman from Thornton Heath, was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting with serious back and neck injuries.
She was released from hospital on Tuesday. The driver of the lorry was not injured.
PC Pete Traylor, from Hampton Traffic Garage said, although it looked like the sports car had been driven out of the estate via Ilex Way, initial reports suggested the car had been travelling at speed southbound on Leigham Court Road.
"A lorry, travelling north, attempted to pass a stationery refuge collection lorry and the two vehicles collided," he said. "We believe the man and woman were casual acquaintances on a social drive. At the moment we do not know the purpose of their journey.
"At this stage of the investigation, it looks like the driver of the MGF was the main cause of the accident, but we still want to hear from witnesses."
Ricardo Kevin saw the accident happen from his top floor flat opposite the Fern Lodge Estate, which was next to the scene of the accident.
"I heard an explosion and saw the sports car fly back," he said. "The car was a write-off. "Everyone was trying to get the driver out of the car but his leg was stuck and he couldn't breathe. The woman also looked like she was in a lot of pain.
"I can't believe the man died - it's so sad."
Mr Roye's inquest was opened and adjourned today and his post mortem is due to take place tomorrow.
BOC Industrial were unavailable for comment.
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information should call the Met's Collision Investigation Unit at Hampton Traffic Garage on 020 8941 9011.
No arrests have been made.
