After decades stuck in time, repair work on Wimbledon's town centre clock started today.

Following months of pressure from the Wimbledon Guardian, the UK's largest pub operator, Punch Taverns, agreed to fix the historic time piece above the Prince of Wales Tavern.

The company, with an annual turnover of £1.5billion, is footing the £6,250 repair bill while Merton Council stumps up £3,550 for the cost of scaffolding.

In October, June Whitfield joined local residents and Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond in support of the paper's Time to Tick campaign, lobbying for the clock to be fixed.

Today she told the Wimbledon Guardian: "It's wonderful news. Local residents along with the pub's customers will be delighted to get their clock back.

"There's nothing more annoying than a clock that doesn't work, especially one in such a prominent position. It's about time they fixed it."

She added: "Small things like this are extremely important and mean an awful lot to the whole community."
