Plans to hand out lollipops to revellers coming out of clubs to curb antisocial behaviour in Surrey have been questioned by Rowan Cole.
The Conservative Walton Central council candidate is unsure about the plans given the tight financial position Surrey Police are in.
The 20-year-old said: "We are fortunate to live in one of the safest counties in the country and I fully support the work of the police.
"I know the stresses the police are under, however, I do question this latest 'crime fighting tactic'. "At a time when the police are short of money is this really the best use of taxpayers' cash?"
Mr Cole said he would be contacting Elmbridge neighbourhood inspector Paul Yearwood to demand answers about the scheme.
Mr Cole wants to know if the police justify this expense, how they define the parameters for success, and how will they know it is good value for money.
Surrey Police have asked for a 9.7 per cent increase on their share of council tax.
