A woman threw herself in front of a train which was travelling through Wandsworth Town station this evening.
British Transport Police were called to the scene at 5.24pm and London Ambulance Service and the Metropolitan Police attended the incident.
A BTP spokesman said: "A train was approaching the station at around 60mph when a woman ran from the platform and in front of the train.
"The driver of the train, which was heading to London Waterloo, was unable to stop."
The fatality caused the disruption of train services during rush-hour, affecting South West Trains between London Waterloo and Hounslow, Windsor and Eton Riverside and London Waterloo, Reading and London Waterloo and between Kingston and Richmond.
A London Ambulance spokesman said: "We were called just after 5.20pm and sent an ambulance, rapid response car and an officer to the scene.
"Sadly, the patient was already dead when we got there."
Police say the woman will have to be identified using fingerprints. It is thought she was in her 20s.
Wandsworth Town train station has reopened and all lines are now operating. Residual delays of up to 30 minutes can be expected.
Trains towards London still cannot stop at Wandsworth Town.
