A man has died after being stabbed at a popular beauty spot in Walton.
Police were called shortly after 3pm after the man in his 50s was found at Cowey Sale.
Police said they were speaking to a number of witnesses to try to establish what happened at what is said to be a popular gay cruising site.
The man was taken by air ambulance to St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey where he underwent surgery but he was pronounced dead at 5.30pm.
The area has been cordoned off and Walton Bridge and Walton Lane have been closed while investigations continue.
Witnesses reported some nine police cars, three ambulances and two ambulance cars attending the scene.
The Surrey police helicopter was circling the area and police dogs were used to assist the investigation.
A Surrey Police spokesman said: "We have launched a murder investigation after a man was assaulted in Walton Lane just off Walton Bridge today."
