A man who was stabbed in public toilets in a popular gay cruising ground in Walton has been identified.
Peter Jeffrey Akers, 50, known as Jeff, was stabbed in Walton Lane, just off Walton Bridge at around 3pm yesterday afternoon.
Mr Akers, from Wallington, had a male partner who he had been living with for 22 years. The retired accountant had no children.
A postmortem examination held at the Royal Surrey County Hospital revealed the cause of death as a single stab wound to the back.
The weapon used was a large carving knife which was recovered from the scene.
Police have arrested a 29-year-old man from Walton who handed himself in at Newbury police station just before midday.
He is being questioned by detectives from Surrey Major Crime Team.
Police are appealing for information from the gay community following the incident and anyone that was in the vicinity between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
Detectives investigating the case have urged anyone in the area at the time of the attack to contact them with information.
They have promised to keep the information anonymous if necessary.
"Police do not need to know why callers were in the area at the time," a spokeswoman said.
