There is a marvellously mysterious quality to the paintings by Edwina Wardle, currently on show at the Fountain Gallery in East Molesey.

Ghostly and ethereal are two other descriptions which sping to mind when wandering around this show - interestingly called by the artist The Bigger Picture.

Edwina takes inspiration from the natural world - horizon lines, trees, the texture of rock or twigs or leaves. She admits that sometimes these elements are recognisable but at other times they become abstract suggestions.

In a number of her paintings the simpler man-made world of the garden has been the springboard but, whatever the motivation, these works repay close scrutiny.

The gorgeously titled Not Wanting To Fade Away grabs my attention with its vivid autumnal colours, while Ghost Trees, in the palest shades of grey, is eye-catching for different reasons.

Talking further about her creative aims, Edwina says she likes to explore "the significance of the insignificant". This may sound abstruse, but when you see her works - which can take her as long as two years to achieve - you understand.

Grey Landscape With White Flowers is just as it sounds, but to enjoy Fading Pleasures you'll have to visit the gallery - you won't be disappointed.
