A Croydon MP has been slammed for taking £1,000 in Crystal Palace tickets by families whose homes will be knocked down to make way for a revamp of the football club’s ground.
A neighbour of the stadium claims Steve Reed,MP for Croydon North, has not responded to residents who contacted him for support.
Before any building work on Selhurst Park can begin, six families on Wooderson Close have to be given a year’s notice and find somewhere else to live.
Five of the six South Norwood homes are owned by Croydon Council.
Les Parry has lived on the road for 22 years and was shocked to discover Mr Reed had been given free tickets by Crystal Palace this year.
The Labour MP’s register of interests shows he was given two hospitality tickets, worth £720, on March 20 and another single hospitality ticket, worth £360, on April 4.
For the match on April 4, when Crystal Palace beat Arsenal 3-0, Mr Reed tweeted that he had attended with Labour leader Keir Starmer.
Mr Starmer’s own register of interests shows he was given two hospitality tickets for the same match.
After the March 20 match, Mr Reed tweeted: “Fantastic to be at a buzzing Selhurst Park today to watch Palace thrash Everton 4-0 to reach the FA Cup semi-finals #Eagles.”
Mr Parry, a council tenant, said: “It most definitely shows a conflict of interest.
"He has registered cases of at least three tenants from Wooderson Close, he has done nothing on these cases.
"He has never got himself involved with the people and never met with the six families or the community.
“How can you represent the views of the people without speaking to them and what impression does it give when you’re getting hospitality from an applicant to the tune of £750 a pop?
"How can the public have confidence in that?”
Mr Parry said he wanted to see more communication between the club and the residents on options for the move.
He also wanted all six families to be offered suitable new homes before anybody is moved.
It has been four years since Crystal Palace’s planning application to expand Selhurst Park’s main stand was approved.
Since then Wooderson Close residents have been waiting to hear about when they will be moved.
The original planning application should have expired after four years but the club said Croydon Council has allowed it to update the existing permission.
The club submitted 40 revised documents to the council at the end of July including a 41-page report which said the amendments should be “approved without delay”.
Public consultation on these additions will be open until August 25.
Steve Reed was contacted for comment.
