A car park in Croydon town centre has been closed for more than 10 days after a car caught fire following a crash on the top floor.

There is still no confirmed date for when the Centrale multi-storey car park will reopen.

On August 12, 150 people were evacuated from the shoping centre when a car caught fire in the car park.

The car was destroyed and ond one woman who was injured in the incident was sent to hospital for treatment, it is not known whether this was due to the crash or the fire.

Around 15 firefighters were sent to deal with the blaze which took around an hour to get under control.

The shopping centre, which closed as a precaution, opened shortly after.

Since then, the centre’s management has said the car park will remain closed until “further notice”.

In the meantime, drivers are being sent to the Whitgift open air car park.

But some have responded to the announcements on social media saying the suggested car park isn’t a good alternative.

One wrote: “The Whitgift car park is extremely run down and feels very unsafe. With this being the only alternative, what can be done to improve it?”

While another said: “Whitgift car park is awful! Also the payment method is overly confusing and extortionate! Not a very good alternative!”

On the day of the fire, Labour MP for Croydon Central Sarah Jones, sent her “thoughts to those affected by the fire”.

She tweeted: “Centrale car park remains closed following this incident earlier. Thank you to our emergency services for their swift response. My thoughts are with those affected by the fire.”

A spokesperson for the shopping centre said: “Centrale & Whitgift remain open for customers with a variety events over the coming weeks including the Summer of Fun.

"Centrale multi-storey car park is, however, still currently closed until further notice, so we recommend those travelling by car to shop or attend our events use Whitgift Open Air Car park.”
