A Balham mum who set-up a website which helps recycle baby goods has been nominated for a national environmental award.

Joanna Pearce set up nappyvalley.co.uk in September 2006 after being inspired walking around Battersea's Northcote Road.

"If you know this area, you will know that if you are not pushing a pram, you are in the minority! With so many families living in such close proximity, I thought there must be scope for a localised ebay' specialising just in baby items," she said.

Because the site lists goods in Wandsworth buyers won't have to travel far to pick up goods pumping harmful gases into the air.

And buyers can use the online distance calculator to make sure they shop close to home.

"Being environmentally friendly came into the thinking process when we designed the site," said the mum-of-two.

Nappy Valley is an area where young couples with primary and pre-school aged children move to. In parenting circles, Clapham, Balham and Wandsworth Common are often referred to as Nappy Valley.

Visitors can browse the site for free and it costs £2 to place an ad.

The site has been nominated for a Future Friendly award - with a potential prize of £10,000.

If she wins Joanna says she'll use the cash to extend her service to more neighbourhoods.

Winners of The Future Friendly Award will be announced at a central London ceremony on March 6.
