Van owners in Mole Valley are being warned to be extra vigilant following a spate of catalytic converter thefts.
East Surrey Police say since the beginning of the year 34 catalytic converters - a device which treats a vehicle's exhaust to reduce pollution - have been stolen from Mole Valley, Reigate, Banstead and Tandrige.
The thefts have mostly been from Ford Transit vans.
It is thought the devices are stolen for scrap.
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Raymer said: "We believe those committing these offences are travelling into Surrey and specifically targeting vehicles with catalytic converters.
"It only takes a few minutes for a thief to crawl under your vehicle and remove the converter which is then sold on.
"Officers from the local Safer Neighbourhood Teams are visiting outlets, such as scrap metal yards, in order to obtain information on those attempting to sell the devices on.
"But we are asking the community to play their part and let us know if you see anything suspicious or if someone attempts to sell you cheap scrap metal."
Owners are advices to mark their property with their name and contact details so stolen items can be more easily returned if found.
Anyone with information about the thefts should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222.
