A solar-powered radio station broadcasting throughout a major environmental festival this summer needs people to spread green messages on the airwaves.

The Kingston Green Radio project will be on air for the duration of the borough's Paint the Town Green festival, running from May 16 to June 6.

Kingston resident Sam Hermitage will run it from the Environment Centre in Fairfield South, Kingston.

He will use a renewable energy unit, charged by eight solar panels he is currently developing, to power the station.

DJ Sean Creed from Brighton's Reverb Radio and John Moore, who runs Radio Avalon at the Glastonbury festival, will help out with their broadcasting experience.

Mr Hermitage said: "The station is intended to link together all the aspects of the festival and give people the chance to put their ideas on the green agenda.

"People can promote an event in the festival, educate people on a green subject on a local level and communicate in an interactive way."

He is looking for people, especially school pupils and university students, to create their own programmes.

A studio will also be available for debates, or for people to use if they want to speak about a specific subject.

"We are also looking to link up with events or performances happening elsewhere," said Mr Hermitage.

"We are not worried if there is poor weather and we run out of power to broadcast. It will show people energy should not be taken for granted."

The station will have between a one and three mile broadcasting radius.
