Young green guardians at St John's Primary School in Kingston unveiled an eco-quilt at a special assembly.

Each of the school's 200 pupils brought in an old pillow case or sheet on World Environment Day on June 5, which was used to create the quilt and emphasise the importance of recycling old materials.

They each painted their face on to a square of material taken from the cloth and these were stitched together by parents over Christmas.

Teaching assistant Jean Green said: "We are really proud of the quilt and it will now be hung in the school hall to remind pupils of the importance of being green."
