West Molesey residents are being warned about disposing of rubbish with personal details on safely, after a man was spotted searching through wheelie bins.
Last Thursday the man was seen in Fleetside looking through the bins at about 11.30am. He took a magazine from a witness' bin which displayed her name and address.
Neighbourhood specialist officer for West Molesey, PC Phil Jebb, said: "I would like to remind residents to take care when disposing of rubbish in the bin that may have information regarding their identity or finances. These sorts of documents should be shredded before they are thrown out.
"Criminals will search through your rubbish looking for bank or credit card statements; in fact any personal information. Everyday old gas, electric, telephone bills, insurance documents, bank statements and personal letters are thrown away. This information can then be used to steal your identity."
