Severe delays were caused in Croydon's town centre after a car collided with a lamppost.
A man, believed to be aged in his 40s, has been rushed to hospital by air ambulance after the smash at around 6pm in Barclay Road.
Emergency services closed part of the A232 Fairfield Road westbound and police officers and two fire engines are understood to have attended the scene.
All lanes were reopened at around 10.30pm.
A spokesman for the Met Police confirmed the man's injuries were thought to be serious but not life-threatening.
