1811 - Paper money becomes legal tender in Britain.
1941 - The House of Commons is partially destroyed in London's heaviest ever air raid.
1968 - A new 50p coin is unveiled.
2000 - A tram line opens in Croydon. It is the first time trams had appeared on London's streets in 50 years.
2002 - British Marines discover a massive arms cache abandoned by Osama bin Laden's fighters, in a cave in Afghanistan. The cavern is packed to the ceiling with 30 truckloads of ammunition, as well as 2 Russian tanks.
2007 - Tony Blair announced that he is stepping down as Prime Minister.
