Chiswick resident Peter Lovell set off on an adventure with latitude last Saturday.

As winners of InGear's expedition competition, he and two others, Spike Reid and David Smith, are now circling the globe, travelling at exactly 50 degrees north.

Calling themselves Team Latitude, the trio received a Land Rover 110 Defender for the trip and a £10,000 grant as well as sponsorship from the Royal Geographic Society and the Institute of British Geographers.

They came up with the idea of a 50th parallel expedition as a way to observe and record how climate changes affect people's lives.

Mr Reid, 25, is looking after communications and photography, while Mr Smith, 27, is responsible for the cooking and liaising with embassies. Devonshire Gardens resident Mr Lovell, 26, is the team mechanic.

After taking a ferry from Dover to Calais, the team will drive east through Belgium, into Poland, then Ukraine and on to Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
