Doctor Who and Royal Shakespeare Company actor Bruce Purchase has died at his home in Putney, aged 69.

Purchase - perhaps best known for his role as The Captain in the Doctor Who episode the Pirate Planet from 1978 - was a founder member of Sir Laurence Olivier's National Theatre as well as a regular performer with the RSC.

The New Zealand-born actor also appeared in television shows I, Claudius, and Rumpole of the Bailey and film Richard III.
