Three flood alerts have been issued across parts of south west London after yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms.

The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts across parts of south west London, affecting areas between Putney Bridge and Teddington Weir, as well as the River Thames at Trowlock Island and the Tidal River Crane at Twickenham.

In recent days London has been hit by heavy and persistent rain following the arrival of Storm Debi, which hit the UK in the early hours of Monday, November 13.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms was issued for London on Tuesday, leading to further rainfall across the city.

Tidal Thames riverside between Putney Bridge and Teddington Weir

A flood alert for the Tidal Thames riverside running between Putney Bridge and Teddington Weir has been issued by the Environment Agency.

According to the Environment Agency, River levels are expected to be high due to high spring tides.

In Richmond, a high tide of 4.61 metres above sea level was forecast to occur at around 3:15pm today (November 15), and a high tide of 4.72 metres is forecast at 3:45am tomorrow (November 16).

People are being advised to expect flooding of low-lying tides and footpaths, which may exist between one and two hours either side of high tide, although property flooding is not expected.

There are currently warnings for potential flooding in place for these areas:

  • Putney Embankment (SW15)
  • Chiswick Mall and Strand on the Green (W4)
  • Thames Bank at Mortlake (SW14)
  • Ranelagh Drive (TW1)
  • Friars Lane and Water Lane (TW9) Riverside
  • The Embankment at Twickenham Towpath below Teddington Lock

According to the Environment Agency, the river flow at Teddington Weir is high for this time of year at 223 cubic metres per second and is “rising.”

In a statement on its website, the Environment Agency wrote: “We anticipate the flows to remain high for the next 5 days.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.”

River Thames at Trowlock Island

A flood alert has been issued for the River Thames at Trowlock Island, although property flooding is not currently expected.

The Environment Agency is warning that river flows are rising slowly in the Thames as a result of “heavy persistent rainfall.”

The next high tide is expected at Trowlock Island today (November 15) at 4pm and is expected to reach approximately 5.02 metres.

A second high tide is expected at 4:30am tomorrow (November 16) and is forecast to reach 5.07 metres.

The Environment Agency has advised that it's monitoring the situation, and is advising people to avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses whilst these alerts are in place.

Tidal River Crane at Twickenham

In Richmond a high tide of 4.61 average metres above sea level was forecast to occur at around 3pm today (November 15).

As a result of high river flows travelling downwards from the River Crane, the Crane Tidal Gates will not be able to close to hold back incoming tides from the River Thames.

This will push water levels “very high” according to the Environment Agency, with flooding of gardens and low lying land to be expected this afternoon.

However, no flooding of buildings is currently expected.

Residents in affected areas are being advised to monitor local water levels and weather conditions whilst flood alerts are in place, and to act on their flood plans.

People are also advised to avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding.
