A family-run Croydon haulier says the expansion of ULEZ in London is directly forcing businesses to leave the capital.
ELB is a trucking company that transports goods and supplies to businesses, schools, and other buildings.
It was established in 1970 as a three-person partnership and the current managing director, Peter Eason, bought the business from his father George in 1985.
Peter Eason said four of his company’s customers have moved out of London altogether since the ULEZ was expanded across all London boroughs at the end of August.
The zone initially only covered central London, but the expansion saw it double in size to cover all 32 London boroughs.
The ULEZ expansion was fraught with controversy at the time it was announced by Sadiq Khan and Peter said its impacts were starting to trickle down.
Peter said: “On a day-to-day business, it didn't really affect ELB because to know but it did start to affect it when loads of our staff had to change their vehicles.
“This means my staff had to pay £12.50 just to get into work.
“We’re seeing businesses leaving London and relocating all over the country due to the impact of the ULEZ on their bottom line.
“It is really damaging for our industry, too.
“For ELB it has a minimal impact because we have invested heavily in a modern fleet and our vehicles meet the emissions standards dictated to us.
“However, what it does mean is drivers on lower incomes who use older but perfectly roadworthy vehicles are being punished.
“The poorer you are, the harder you are affected.”
The ULEZ expansion was fraught with controversy at the time it was announced by Sadiq Khan and Peter said its impacts were starting to trickle down.
The company has made significant investments in equipping its trucks with advanced safety equipment.
This includes AI cameras and technology that assist drivers in easing risks such as fatigue, tailgating, and potential accidents involving vulnerable road users.
These technologies rely on data analysis and incident detection to enhance overall safety on the roads.
ELB has proudly achieved FORS Gold status, an award they have claimed every year since 2014 which recognises ELB's commitment to vehicle safety and emissions.
