In 2023, many primary schools in Croydon were awarded the highest possible hygiene rating of 5 by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
As well as safeguarding public health in restaurants and cafes, the FSA have a duty to make sure catering at schools is safe and upholding quality standards.
As part of its efforts, the FSA conducts assessments and rates the hygiene standards of catering through the Food Hygiene Rating system.
This system has a six-point scale, where a rating of 5 means 'very good' hygiene practices.
