Aldrington Road Streatham flat fire: Three rescued

Fire crews were called to a flat fire in Aldrington Road in Streatham early this morning (July 12) at around 1:41am.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to the scene with crews from Tooting, West Norwood, Norbury and surrounding fire stations despatched to the scene.

Part of the ground floor of the semi-detached property made up of three floors was damaged by the fire.

Three people who became trapped on the second floor were rescued by fire crews from the building by ladder and were treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation. 

Two further people exited the building before fire crews arrived.

A sixth person left the building from a first floor window and was taken to hospital by paramedics after sustaining injuries.

Fire crews worked for over an hour and the fire was under control by 3:07am.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by both London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters are responding to a fire on Aldrington Road, Streatham.

“Part of the ground floor, in a semi-detached property of three floors, was damaged by fire. Three people were rescued from the second floor by crews using a 13.5m ladder.

“The Brigade was first called about the fire at 0141, and firefighters had the incident under control by 0307. Crews from Tooting, West Norwood, Norbury and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and Metropolitan Police Service.”

Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: “This was a complex incident, involving a property that had been converted into a number of separate flats across three floors.

"Firefighters worked hard to bring the incident under control, and in the process rescued three people who were trapped in a second floor flat by the fire. The professionalism and dedication shown by crews last night highlights the work all our firefighters and officers do to serve and protect London. 

“I’d also like to thank our emergency service partners from the London Ambulance Service and Metropolitan Police Service for their support at the scene whilst we responded. The Brigade’s specialist fire investigators will now support our policing colleagues as we work to determine the cause of the fire.”
