Police have provided an update on a shopkeeper who was stabbed as he confronted suspected shoplifters.

The stabbing took place on Church Street at around 11.20am on Thursday (July 11).

The Met Police said the shoplifter had confronted suspected shoplifters who were linked to an earlier robbery on South End.

Members of the public helped the shopkeeper after the stabbing and he was then rushed to hospital.

He currently remains in hospital but his injuries are not life-threatening or life changing.

Two 14-year-old boys will appear in court on Friday (June 12) - they are each charged with wounding with intent, robbing £20 worth of vapes and possessing knives.

One of the teens is also charged with racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress.

The stabbing took place metres away from where a man was stabbed to death in April.

On April 12, 21-year-old Rijkaard Siafa died at the scene of the stabbing on Fellmongers Yard near Surrey Street.

Following that stabbing Surrey Street market traders said they felt scared about the violence in the area.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), market trader and community activist Jose Joseph said: “We’re not happy about these things, we’re scared about these things. We all have children.

“There is fear because of what happened, people think this a bad place. There are mostly ladies and children here, they need protection.”
