A Croydon pub could be demolished and make way for flats, but some residents aren’t happy.
White Rock Developments applied to Croydon Council to demolish The Glamorgan Pub on Cherry Orchard Road and build an eight-storey residential building in its place.
The Glamorgan Pub has stood in Croydon since the 1880s and it closed in 2016, and since then, has remained a derelict building.
If approved, the building will have 24 flats with a roof terrace and a basement.
The developers’ original plan was to build an 11-storey flat with 36 flats, but this was adjusted after they engaged with campaign groups.
A spokesperson for White Rock Developments said: “The current proposal still seeks to re=provide the public house and deliver much-needed high-quality homes.
“The new design of the scheme draws inspiration from the already consented schemes to the West which are under construction.
“It is considered to reflect the emerging character of the area and sit comfortably within the street scene.”
However, despite this readjustment, some residents are still unhappy with the new proposal.
Father and daughter Roger and Phoebe Wagner produced a short documentary called (Pub)lic House centred around closed pubs in Croydon and The Glamorgan was featured.
Both of them are part of Save the Glamorgan, a campaign group to reopen the pub and stop it from being demolished for flats.
Phoebe Wagner said: “The Glamorgan recently lost its title as an asset of community value and the owners are trying to build flats over it.
“So, the film is in full support of preventing that, but instead of letting these spaces rot, we want them to be used by the entire community and become a Public House for public use.”
87 objections were made by Croydon residents while only six residents supported the idea.
White Rock Developments said: “The application meets the strategic policy objectives of the London Plan as well as the aims and objectives of local Council policy.
“Therefore, this proposal should be allowed to deliver much needed good quality homes for residents of Croydon and Londoners more widely.”
Croydon Council is yet to decide on whether to approve or reject the new application.
