Croydon Council has announced that it has ring-fenced over £12m for the maintenance and improvement of its highways for the year ahead, with a list of roads and footpaths set for a revamp being released.
Several central Croydon thoroughfares are included on the list to be repaired or replaced this financial year.
Mayor Jason Perry and the Conservative-led Council recently agreed upon a £12.572m investment into its highways for the upcoming financial year.
This funding comes from the council’s capital budget, and is propped up by funding from Transport for London (TfL) and the Department for Transport’s Local Transport Network North Reallocated HS2 capital funding, which is being used to improve roads across the country.
Croydon Council has called its highway network its single most valuable asset, adding: “Without it, none of the council’s priorities, values and visions can be realised.”
Currently, Croydon has 726 kilometres of carriageways, 1,235 kilometres of footpaths, 62 highway-maintained structures and bridges, 33,600 road gullies, 27,000 pieces of street furniture (traffic signs, pedestrian carriers, street name plates, grit bins, etc) and 25,700 street lighting columns.
These assets have a total replacement value of around £1.74bn, which the council says must be managed and maintained to ‘ensure depreciation of the assets is kept to a minimum’.
Flood alleviation works will also take place under this scheme.
According to the council, strategic roads as well as those servicing key bus routes, cycleways and footpaths near shopping areas will take priority.
Thoroughfares near key sites like hospitals, care homes and schools have also been bumped up the list.
The local authority has said it will aim to use recycled materials in an effort to improve the sustainability of its highways.
In addition to this, infrastructure that supports sustainable transport will also be prioritised.
In a statement announcing the investment, Cllr Perry said: “Residents often tell me that the condition of the highway infrastructure really matters to them.
"This investment in the future of our roads will improve infrastructure and support the regeneration of Croydon.
“Croydon’s highway network is the single most valuable asset that the council owns. Without it, none of the council’s priorities, values and visions can be realised.
"Our careful planning over the next five years aims to provide long-term value for money solutions, not expensive short-term fixes.
"I am determined that good governance is embedded, and best practices adopted when public funds are being spent.”
The council published a list of its prioritised works in its Highway Asset Management Strategy and 2024/25 Highways Capital Programme report.
Dates when these works are set to take place have not yet been released, but the full list can be seen below.
