Sutton residents are being invited to have their say about the proposals to reduce speed limits on several roads in the borough to 20mph.
Sutton Council says that it is committed to providing a safer environment for all road users and making it easier for people to walk and cycle in the area if they wish to.
After receiving feedback from a number of residents, along with discussions with local ward councillors, they have developed some proposals and are encouraging residents to let them know what they think.
The council has proposed that many roads in Sutton have their speed limits cut down for traffic calming measures.
The roads that the council is proposing to have their speed limits cut are:
- Banstead Road
- Park Hill
- Cambridge Road
- Oxford Road
- Harrow Road
- Warren Par Road
- Hawthorn Road
- Fairview Road
- King’s Lane
- Wales Avenue
- Walnut Close
- Weihurst Gardens
- Alpine View
- Park Hill Close
- Hill Road
The council believes that reducing the speed limit to 20mph will have huge benefits in improving road safety.
This includes reducing vehicle speed, creating a safer environment for road users, making it easier to walk and cycle in the area, helping them to improve the overall air quality, and reducing the risk and severity of accidents.
There will also be speed cushions on Cambridge Road and a new zebra crossing on Banstead Road.
Before Sutton Council moves ahead with the proposals, it wants residents to share their thoughts, views and opinions.
Cllr Barry Lewis said: “We’re led by you, the residents.
"We’re against the blanket 20-mile-per-hour zone across the borough and we are instead focusing on the roads that you tell us are most in need of safety measures.
“We want a safer environment for everyone who uses our roads, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.
“We want to encourage people where they can to walk, cycle, or take public transport.
“We want you to have your say.
“Please let us know what you think about the proposals in your area.”
People can have their say on the Sutton Council website.
