The Metropolitan Police service in Croydon has “come together” to raise money for an animal charity, just weeks after two dogs were alleged to have been thrown from a fourth-floor balcony.

The incident happened at 6.20pm on Tuesday, August 6, on Cherry Orchard Road in Croydon.

Police attended the address and found a man had barricaded himself inside a building and was allegedly throwing objects at police officers.

Cordons were put in place as a precautionary measure to protect the public.

The man was arrested before 3am on Wednesday, August 7 on suspicion of animal cruelty, criminal damage, indecent exposure, and breach of a court order.

He was later detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to a hospital in south London.

Moved by the event, local officers have decided to support Croydon Animal Samaritans by participating in a 25km Thames Bridges Trek.

Their goal is to raise £2,000 through a JustGiving page, which highlights the charity’s mission to rescue, provide shelter, and offer essential veterinary care and rehoming services to animals in need.

The Just Giving page reads: “This charity not only rescues and provides shelter to countless animals in need, but also offers essential veterinary care, rehabilitation, and rehoming services.

“Unfortunately, the ongoing costs of care and resources have increased, making it challenging for them to continue their vital work.

“By coming together to support this fundraiser, we can help ensure that these animals receive the love, care, and second chances they deserve.”

London Fire Brigade also attended the scene at 7.34pm on August 7 and the incident was over for them at 3.11am on Wednesday.

30 firefighters from Croydon, Woodside, and Norbury attended the scene.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “At about 6.20pm on Tuesday, August 6, officers attended Cherry Orchard Road in Croydon to carry out arrest enquiries in connection with an ongoing investigation.

“The man was arrested shortly before 3am on Wednesday, August 7, on suspicion of cruelty to animals, criminal damage, indecent exposure and breach of a court order.

“He was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to a south London hospital.”
