Local residents in Wimbledon were told to keep their “windows and doors closed” this morning, as fire crews battled overnight to tackle a fire at a recycling site.
Fire crews were called to a fire at a recycling site on Weir Road in Wimbledon late yesterday evening at around 10:26pm, after the brigade reported receiving 45 calls.
The scene was attended by 40 firefighters and six fire engines.
A pile of domestic waste was destroyed by the fire and local residents were issued with advice to keep windows and doors shut due to smoke in the area.
Station Commander Matt Gregory at the scene said: "We're advising local residents to shut their windows and doors due to the smoke.
“This is likely to be a protracted incident with our firefighters remaining on scene damping down deep seated pockets of fire throughout the day.
"The Brigade's 999 Control centre has received 46 calls alerting them to the fire."
Fire crews worked overnight to tackle the blaze, which eventually was under control by 7:34am this morning.
