A major road linking Croydon and Sutton is closed and could be for another month after a sinkhole was found appearing.

Thames Water is carrying out repairs on one of their sewers on Croydon Road, SM6.

Since the first report, the team has been working with SGN (the gas network managers) and TFL because there is a gas pipe near where the repair is needed.

Because the repair is complex and there is a big hole in the road, they have had to close it completely.

The roads are expected to be closed for the majority of October.

The pedestrian footpath and cycleway will remain open.

To quicker these repairs, Thames Water are working from Monday to Sunday between 8am and 8.30pm.

Tankers will be used to remove the wastewater, allowing residents to use their facilities as normal while protecting properties and the environment from flooding.

A statement on the Thames Water website says: “We are currently carrying out repairs to our sewer on Croydon Road, which was found following a sinkhole appearing.

“Since the initial report, the team have been working in collaboration with SGN and TFL due to a gas pipe being located within close proximity to where the repair is required.

“Due to the complexity of the repair and the large void in the carriageway we have had to implement a full road closure commencing from 25 September 24.

“The pedestrian footpath and cycleway will remain open.

“To help expedite these repairs we are working longer hours:

“Monday to Sunday 8:00am to 8:30pm

“We will continue to use tankers to take away the wastewater, allowing local residents to be able to use their facilities as normal and protect properties and the environment from flooding.

“The estimated time for overall completion will be four weeks.”
