A teacher has died while serving a prison sentence for the sexual abuse of a student, a report has revealed.
Brian Johncock was convicted of numerous offences in 2019 after a court heard how in the 60s and 70s he would meet the boy at his home in Wallington.
The abuse started after Johncock targeted and groomed the victim whilst teaching him at school and this lasted for a number of years.
Detective Constable Giles Weeden, who led the investigation after the victim came forward in 2017, said: “Johncock used his job as a teacher to exploit a vulnerable child under his care.
“Instead of being a beacon of support, he completely abused his position and groomed a young child for his own gratification.”
DC Weeden mentioned the possibility that there were other victims in the areas of Clapham and Purley.
In 2019, Johncock was jailed for 12 years for four counts of sexual assault/indecency against the victim.
A Prison and Probation Ombudsman released on Tuesday (October 15) has now revealed that Johncock died while receiving surgery for a suspected cancerous tumour in February 2022.
Johncock was 82-years-old at the time of his death and was a serving prisoner at HMP Lewes.
