A Sutton headteacher has given parents tips on how to choose a secondary school for their children.

October 31 marks the deadline for parents to apply their children for school places in Sutton.

Chris McNab, the new headteacher of Overton Grange School, said: “This is a really important time for families, and they need to take time to make the right decision for their child.”

The headteacher has told parents and children to do the following before deciding on a school.

1. Visit as many schools as possible.

Chris encourages people to get a good look around and be prepared with questions.

2. Visit the school during a normal school day.

Once you’ve made a shortlist, parents and children should visit the school on a day outside of the typical open days.

3. Speak to the staff

Chris made it clear that schools are about people and therefore you should ask as many questions as you need.

4. Speak with parents

Chris’ fourth piece of advice is to speak with parents who already have children at the schools you are interested in, to get a second opinion.

5. Use other sources of information

The final piece of advice Chris gives parents is to look at the school’s website which contains a wealth of information concerning both student outcomes and key news and events.

Chris also added that checking the school’s most recent Ofsted report in detail, not just the one-line rating will also help parents identify many of the school’s strengths.

Chris said: “But, before deciding which schools to apply for, you really ought to try to visit the schools you are particularly interested in.

“There are often open events, but if you’re unable to attend, most local schools will be happy to show you around during a school day.

“Just call the school and make an appointment.”

Although it is hoped that most children are given a place at their parents’ first choice school, this is not always possible if there are more applications for a school than there are places available.

For example, Sutton Council has an oversubscription system that encourages families to list preferences for six different secondary schools.

They believe this approach gives families the best chance of securing a place for their child in a school they prefer

Parents must apply by the deadline of October 31.
