A section of the M3 will be closed overnight and on weekends for eight months.

The closures are part of footbridge reinstatement works, scheduled to begin on Monday, November 11.

National Highways Limited has announced these plans, which will affect the London-bound carriageway of the M3 between Junction 4a (A327) and Junction 3 (A322), the coast-bound carriageway between Junction 3 and Junction 4 (A331), and all roads leading to and from these carriageways.

The closures will take place overnight between 9pm and 6am and two full weekends in April and May.

The weekend closures will start at 9pm on Friday and end at 6am on Monday.

The exact dates for these closures will be updated on the National Highways website.

In addition to the closures, a 24-hour 50mph speed limit will be enforced on certain sections of the M3 when the road is not closed.

The speed limit will be imposed on the London-bound carriageway between approximately 60 metres and 1,870 metres north-east of the centreline of The Maultway overbridge (B3015), the coast-bound carriageway between approximately 845 metres east of the centreline of the eastern Junction 3 overbridge and 1,095 metres south-west of the centreline of the western Junction 3 overbridge, and the road leading to the coast-bound carriageway of the M3 at Junction 3 (A322).

Lane width restrictions will also be in place 24 hours a day.

These will be 3.25 metres in lane one, 3.00 metres in lane two, and 2.5 metres in lanes three and four of the London-bound carriageway between points 700 metres and 1,660 metres east of the centreline of The Maultway overbridge.

For the coast-bound carriageway, lane width restrictions of 3.25 metres in lane two, 3.00 metres in lane two, and 2.75 metres in lane four will be in place between a point 55 metres east of the centreline of the eastern Junction 3 overbridge and a point approximately 730 metres west of the centreline of the western Junction 3 overbridge.

The measures are being implemented to ensure road safety while the footbridge reinstatement work is carried out.

The work is expected to last for approximately eight months.

The traffic restrictions, including closures, speed limits, and lane width restrictions, will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation.

Diversion routes will also be clearly signposted.

Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted via the A30, A322, A331, A327, and Grove End.

The order for the traffic restrictions will come into force on Saturday, November 2, and will remain in place for a maximum of 18 months, until the works are complete.
