A man has been charged with making a bomb hoax near East Croydon train station.

On Friday, September 20, at around 4pm police were made aware of a suspicious package near the station.

Members of the public were evacuated and safety cordons were quickly put in place while specialist officers assessed the situation.

The station was evacuated and trains were cancelled for a number of hours.

Specialist teams then carried out a controlled explosion at the site to ensure public safety.

A 45-year-old man has now been charged with making a bomb hoax.

Guillermo Gomez, of Cherry Orchard Road in Croydon, is said to have placed a box containing various items at the One Croydon high rise, known locally as The 50p Building.

Gomez is accused of having the intention to cause others to believe it might explode or ignite.

Gomez was produced from custody at Croydon Crown Court on Monday (November 18).

His Honour Judge Antony Dunne adjourned the case until a later date.
