Manor Road in Wallington remains shut for a third day after concerns about the safety of a structurally unstable building forced its closure.

The building, formerly known as The Brook, has been deemed unsafe following high winds from Storm Bert, which battered London over the weekend.

Photos from residents who complained to the council about the condition of the building a week prior, reveal exposed brickwork and a crumbling façade.

On November 24, Sutton Council’s structural engineer assessed the building after being alerted by the Met Police and London Fire Brigade, who cordoned off the area earlier that day.

The upper façade of the building was confirmed as unstable, prompting the immediate road closure.

Manor Road, a vital link between Wallington Green and Wallington High Street, remains closed between Maldon Road and Park Gate Road.

The closure has caused significant disruption for local bus routes, including the 151, 410, and 463, all of which have been diverted.

Drivers have been advised to avoid the area and plan for longer journeys.

The building’s owners have been instructed to take urgent action to stabilise the structure.

Meanwhile, Sutton Council has contacted the Health and Safety Executive to conduct further inspections.

The Brook is currently the subject of a redevelopment planning application which proposes transforming the site into five self-contained flats.

The plans involve a change of use from a café, restaurant, and independent cinema to residential housing, along with extensive alterations to the building’s structure. These include demolishing a rear extension, adding a two-storey side extension, and converting the loft space.

A Sutton Council spokesperson said: “Keeping residents and pedestrians safe is our priority. The council and emergency services acted swiftly to secure the area, and we have contacted the building owners to ensure they make it safe as a matter of urgency.”

The road closure will remain in place until the structure is stabilised.

A Health and Safety Executive spokesperson said: “We are working with the local authority to ensure that these concerns can be resolved safely.”
