A petition to save Smithfield Market from closure has reached more than 10,000 signatures on Change.org in less than a week.
The City of London Corporation previously voted to withdraw support for Smithfield Meat Market meaning it could shut in 2028.
Before the vote from the corporation, the market was set to move to the outskirts of London in Dagenham but was later called off due to funding concerns.
Following the news of the two potential closures, workers at the market told the BBC it was "all about the money now" adding: "It just means another tradition that will go in London."
Now, a petition has been created on Change.org to help try and save the Smithfield Market.
Petition to save Smithfield Market reaches milestone
So far, the petition has reached more than 10,000 signatures, as Peter Acton, who started the petition shared: "As one of the oldest continuously operating markets in the world, it is a unique symbol of resilience, community, and tradition.
"Closing Smithfield Market risks erasing a vital chapter of London’s heritage and marginalising the livelihoods of countless businesses and individuals who depend on its operations.
"The market’s historical significance and architectural splendour have made it a cherished part of the city, drawing locals and visitors alike to its iconic halls."
Frank Higgins, a supporter of Peter’s petition, added: “850 years of tradition is not to be disposed of for the sake of corporate and commercial interests.”
Currently, the London Museum is taking over the two adjacent buildings at Smithfield.
