More than 50 unsung heroes were honoured last Monday night as Sutton marked the 25th anniversary of National Volunteer Week.

A reception was held at the Europa Gallery for volunteers who have helped others for more than a quarter of a century.

Among those receiving certificates were Harold and Kathleen Claridge, organisers of Sutton Friendly Club for the Blind for 48 years.

Harold was also a founder member of Sutton Talking Newspaper in 1975 and still presents the Clarion section of the weekly tape.

Tom Brake, the MP for Carshalton and Wallington, said: “I was honoured to be asked to present certificates to some of the borough’s longest-standing volunteers.

“Sutton residents’ tradition of providing hard-working and committed volunteers, to hundreds of organisations, is one we can all be thoroughly proud of.”

Mr Brake and Paul Burstow MP were joined by mayor of Sutton Councillor Margaret Court, who unveiled a plaque commemorating the work of volunteers in “enriching our community”.
