An area of Streatham built in Edwardian times has been made a conservation area to preserve its heritage.
The network of nine streets immediately south of Streatham Common, making up the Streatham Lodge Estate, was given the conservation status after residents lobbied Lambeth Council to say the historic area was threatened by “inappropriate” alterations to properties.
Stricter planning controls will now mean the Edwardian houses, built from the early 1900s, including those in Strathbrook Road and Baldry Gardens, will be harder to modify.
Councillor Lib Peck, cabinet member for housing and regeneration, said residents were rightly proud of their neighbourhood.
She added: “I am happy that we are able to preserve the Streatham Lodge estate making sure that future generations can enjoy the ornate workmanship of tradesman from bygone years.”
