Tooting town centre’s new local police team was launched this week in a bid to make its streets safer.
The new Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) will patrol the town centre only, leaving the other teams free to take care of the rest of Tooting.
The team, which includes a sergeant, constables and eight community support officers, will operate seven days a week.
Officers hope to improve quality of life by addressing anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder, environmental crime and other issues important to local people.
It is part of the Tooting Together initiative, set up by the police and the council in response to residents’ calls for more police on the streets.
Sergeant Iain Martin, who heads the new team, said: “Unfortunately, as a busy place, it can sometimes attract a minority who are focused on committing crime or acting in an anti-social manner.
“The new team will provide a visible police presence seven days a week, which will help reassure people and make them feel more secure.”
