Mitcham was bathed in glorious sunshine as thousands celebrated the area’s largest ever carnival.
Dancing, music and a dazzling array of costumes burst through the town centre as the carnival proceeded from Figges Marsh to Three Kings Piece on Saturday.
There was anything but a frosty reception as Merton’s Winter Wonderland winning entry in London’s New Year’s Day parade followed behind a marching band and local primary school pupils, as well as dozens of entrants battling it out to be the year’s best float.
Once at Three Kings Piece, horse display teams and stilt-walkers were among the many form of entertainment impressing visitors long into the afternoon.
And for the first time in the carnival’s history a live music stage was in place for local bands with popular blues group Roadhouse headlining, in addition to the customary fun fair.
The competitive juices were also flowing as junior footballers battled it out in front of the crowds in a little league tournament.
Merton's new mayor, councillor Nick Draper, said: "It really was an excellent day and impossible for just one person to take in.
"This was the biggest and best carnival, and with 27 incredible floats it was so difficult to pick a winner."
Bishopsford school in Morden eventually scooped the best float award.
