The scales in the jockeys’ weighing-in room at Epsom racecourse added some unkind pounds and ounces to Jan Mason’s usual weight when she stood on the scales for the annual weigh-in.
The new Mayor of Epsom was weighed in wearing her full (and very heavy) robes plus her chains of office.
Afterwards, the outgoing mayor Councillor Alan Winkworth was duly weighed out as part of the tradition which symbolises the former mayor handing over office to the new mayor.
Councillor Mason said: “I am really enjoying my duties so far, including the weigh-in. I doubt many mayors in the country actually get on jockey scales, to have their picture taken with all their heavy robes and regalia.
“I have already had the chance to meet some lovely residents from all over the borough and also catch up with old friends. I look forward to meeting many more local people who live and work in this fabulous area and helping to make a difference by supporting my chosen charities.”
Councillor Mason, who will be accompanied by her husband Alan during her civic duties, has handed over her position as chairman of the planning committee to Councillor Graham Dudley.
