A renown Iraqi ceramicist has helped volunteers to create an extraordinary mosaic as a centrepiece of the Sutton Imagine arts festival.
Yasmin Omer, a fine arts graduate, revived intricate techniques used by pioneers of the “eternal art” more than 5,000 years ago.
The Sutton resident won several commissions to decorate buildings with her elaborate mosaics while working in Sweden.
Colleague Beata Howe said: “Having lived in Baghdad, Prague, Sweden and London, Yasmin has had the pleasure of participating in many art exhibitions, which led to a number of commissions.
“Her modern style, mixed with old flecks of how she remembers Iraq, add the wondrous ingredients necessary to tell a story.
“The mosaic Imagine was exhibited in Sutton Library, together with the individual mosaics of the group members, who all found the experience of working together very uplifting and forged new friendships.”
