Thefts from cars and vans are on the increase in Merton, with designer handbags, sunglasses, computers and sat-nav machines all being targeted.
Police in the Figges Marsh area have warned the crimes are opportunistic, with most vehicles being broken into because valuables have been left on display.
Motorists are urged not to leave any valuables in plain sight and to leave the glove box empty and open to help deter thieves.
Sat-nav owners should make sure windscreens are wiped clean to remove the tell-tale marks left by the cradle which holds the dashboard device, as thieves often break in and search the vehicle if they think valuables may be hidden.
Anyone acting suspiciously should be reported to the Figges Marsh safer neighbourhood team on 0300 123 1212 or in an emergency dial 999.
