A major water main burst in Tulse Hill today, flooding businesses, homes, and disrupting trains from Tulse Hill station.

The 21-inch main burst in Norwood Road burst at 3.30am close to the junction with Palace Road.

Water flooded properties in Parade Mews, as well as Hamilton’s secondhand car dealership in Norwood Road, according to eyewitnesses.

The flooding also meant electricity in the area was lost. As a result no trains were able to stop at Tulse Hill station until power was restored there at 10am.

Electricity was not restored to other affected properties until after 1pm, according to businesses.

Norwood Road was closed off in both directions while emergency teams worked to stop the flooding.

A Thames Water spokeswoman said it was currently closed between Christchurch Road and York Hill Road while repairs were carried out to the main, and this was expected to take until the weekend.

She said: "Our engineers reacted immediately to shut off the pipe, causing some customers to experience interruptions to their water supply for a short period of time from 5.30am. All supplies were quickly restored.”

"Approximately ten properties nearby have been affected by flooding. We are extremely sorry for this and will do as much as we can to help these customers,” she added.

Emergency services helped to pump water from the affected properties.

Some 10 cars in Hamilton’s forecourt are believed to have been ruined in the flooding, which was up to four feet deep, and extensive damage done to the businesses’s workshop.

Lee Murray, manager of neighbouring business, Norwood Travel, said: “It was a pretty bad flood. It took up the pavement and parts of the road. The water was gushing out.”

The water main burst is the second major flooding incident to have occurred in the area in the past two weeks.

On June 10, a major water main burst on Palace Road, causing sewers to overflow, and flooding some 20 properties.
