Former Prime Minister Sir John Major attended a dinner last week for SeeAbility, the eye care charity based in Epsom.
Sir John, born in Worcester Park, is a keen supporter of its work because his father, Tom, once a trapeze artist, lost his sight.
Recently he agreed to serve for three years as patron of SeeAbility’s Sight Pioneers initiative, which helps people with learning disabilities to get sight tests.
He said: “People who have a learning disability and a visual impairment are hugely disadvantaged in life. SeeAbility has shown that with specialist eye care, people with a learning disability can participate in sight tests to prevent blindness and the devastation to their lives which this would otherwise bring. "I am delighted to extend my support of the eye 2 eye campaign.”
