A civil servant has reached the final in a nationwide search for an undiscovered children's books illustrator.

Alex Paterson, 39, from Epsom, who has received no formal art training, was selected as one of the six finalists out of 1,000 entries for book store Waterstone's Picture This competition which he hopes will help him launch his illustrating career.

The winner of the competition will be given the opportunity to provide artwork for a new story by The Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson titled Freddie and the Fairy.

Talking about the works of Julia Donaldson and illustrator of her books Axel Sheffler, Mr Paterson said: "I have always been frustratingly jealous of their books, wishing I could have their ideas.

"So this competition was the perfect opportunity for me and I am delighted to have made it to the final."

Freddie and the Fairy which will be published by Macmillan Children's Books in winter 2010 with illustrations by the competition’s winner.

They will also be awarded with a contract worth £6,000 and a royalty.

Mrs Donaldson said: “We have a really exciting shortlist with talent from all over the country and a good variety of illustration styles and techniques.

"I’m very much looking forward to see what they all produce for the next round.”

The competition is judged by an expert panel led by Julia Donaldson, her agent Caroline Sheldon, Macmillan Children's Books editor Suzanne Carnell, Waterstone's picture book buyer Kate Skipper, Daily Telegraph children's book reviewer Cassandra Jardin and Lauren Child,writer and illustrator Lauren Child.

The winner will be announced at Bath Festival of Children's Literature between September 18th and 27th.
