A historic Wimbledon street is under threat from overdevelopment, according to heritage campaigners.

Leopold Road, and the two 70m terraces of buildings running along it, form a designated conservation area.

This week conservation group English Heritage named it on an annual report of locations which are under threat in the capital.

A spokesman for the organisation said: “It is currently at risk because of the loss of historic features, inappropriate shop fronts and the dominating presence of traffic, which has led to continual erosion of the area's character.”

English Heritage highlighted the problem in its annual heritage at risk report, which identified 81 London conservation areas that have deteriorated over the last three years or are predicted to deteriorate in the next three.

The report adds the most common threats to conservation areas are plastic windows and doors, poorly maintained roads and pavements and street clutter.
