Wimbledon’s teenage star Laura Robson insists she will be able to make the leap from junior to senior competition smoothly after running former world number five Daniela Hantuchova close on Monday.

In her Grand Slam debut, the tenacious Robson pushed Hantuchova to three sets before succumbing 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at a packed Court Number Two.

And the 15-year-old admitted she was disappointed with how her challenge had faded.

Robson said: “I’m a little bit upset, but I am pretty proud of myself.

“I thought I played really, really well for a good part of the match, and then in the end a couple of things let me down.

“If I would have been killed love and love, then I would have a completely different opinion.

“But it is not that much different from playing in the juniors.

“It was just when I got a break up in the second, I just got really nervous and I made a couple more mistakes than I should have.

“I can still get stronger and fitter, but that gives me something to work on.”

Robson is now coached by Martijn Bok, and the teenager is eager to pay tribute to her Dutch mentor for her continued development.

She added: “Martijn is really smart on which shots to hit and when.

“That’s what I struggled with when I started with him - I just kind of banged the ball again and again.

“But now we’ve been working on mixing it up and that has really helped.”

Robson will now concentrate on defending her junior crown next week, and she accepts it will be a tough assignment.

She added: “That will be a whole different story because it will be all girls that I have played before.

“Also I have the pressure from defending my title, but it is something I’m looking forward to.”
