Croydon FC chairman Dickson Gill has given his backing to new manager Mike Robbins to do things his way after the club were moved back into the Combined Counties Premier Division.

The Trams moved into the Kent League three years ago at the request of the FA due to a lack of teams in the county but have now been granted permission to return to Surrey-based league having been denied in each of the last two summers.

"It was always on the burner from the time we went into the Kent League," said Gill.

"The FA asked us to go there as they were short with the understanding we will get moved back to our own county.

"The first two years they turned us down because they didn't have enough Kent clubs but we reminded them about Christmas time and a spot came available with Fisher Athletic dropping out.

"We need to have stability in the league and being from Surrey we should be playing Surrey-based clubs, with Surrey-based players travelling within Surrey, not going to Kent.

"If and when we go up we will go into the Ryman South so I have made sure I have assured the future of the club."

Former Tunbridge Wells manager Robbins was appointed last week following Tony Beckingham's decision to leave for Lingfield and Gill was pleased with the capture.

"He has worked at this level before and he's a very confident lad," he said.

"I am just going to take a chance with him and said to him not to worry about it and just to come and have a go.

"He is very ambitious and wants to manage in the Ryman League and we would rather that was with us than someone else.

"I am not putting any pressure on him saying he has to win it.

"I have given him all the players details and numbers and he will be running it his way, I am not going to be involved."
